Digitizing the Oberlin College Paleontology Collections

The searchable database will allow me 1) to create laboratory exercises that explore the collections in terms of geographic distribution of specific groups of organisms, 2) to format labs that explore taxa through time, and 3) using the archive more generally as a resource for students to identify the specimens they are handling in lab. In addition, we could do cross-disciplinary studies that combine the historical nature of the collection focusing on a single collector (many of the collectors are Oberlin College faculty and students that have robust documentation within the College Archives). Their travels might be traced through the specimens they collected and accessioned into the collection. That sort of study might be appropriate for a history or anthropology major/minor who is also studying geology.
