Digitizing the Archive: Newspapers of the 19th century British in Chile

projects_image.woo_chileSince the 1820s, Chile and Great Britain have enjoyed a unique relationship that shaped the development of both countries and is still influential today. Studies of British imperialism focus almost exclusively on Britain’s formal colonies, especially those in India and Africa scarcely alluding to South America and never mentioning Chile. The current research project will help to fill this gap in the research by developing a digital archive of the English-language newspapers published in Chile between 1843 and 1904. This extensive archive, currently available only on microfilm at the Biblioteca Nacional de Chile, is virtually untapped. By digitizing these newspapers, we will enable researchers to apply current digital research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) to these fascinating texts.
